Sri Lanka’s upcoming women boxer Purnima Jayasuriya representing 75Kg weight category won a Silver medal and Dhananjaya Weerasinghe who fought in the 64Kg weight Category won a Bronze medal at the Eindhoven Box Cup International Boxing Tournament which is known as the Netherlands’ largest Olympic Boxing event held from 17th to 20th October 2019 at the Eindhoven City in Netherlands. The four-day event attracted 128 boxers from 23 Nations including World’s Top Nations such as Russia, Kazakhstan, France, England and Germany. The Police Boxer Dhananjaya Weerasinghe representing Light Welterweight category beat Afghanistan National Champion Tasal Mosazai in the Quarter Finals and met the Thailand’s Atichai Phoemsap who was the Gold medalist of the Youth Olympic Games , World Youth Championships and Asian Youth Championships in 2018 during the Semi Finals. Thailand Boxer claimed the Gold Medal in the finals and Weerasinghe won the bronze medal in this weight category. Another Police Boxer Purnima Jayasuriya fought with the France National Champion Davina Michela in the Finals. Purnima won the silver medal and it is the highest medal won by a women boxer during this year. The development of second layer of boxers was one of the strategies of the Executive Committee of Boxing Association of Sri Lanka.
