School Boxers win three Silver Medals at the “King of the Ring’ BoxingTournament in Sweden

Three Sri Lankan schoolboy pugilists created history after winning three Silver
Medals at the ‘King of the Ring’ International boxing tournament, as they
participate for the first time from November 21st to 24th in Boras, Sweden. The
seven winners comprising of Junior, Youth and Elite boxers were selected at the
recently held Stubbs Shield Boxing Championships. Seven School Boxers
participated for this event in the Junior, Youth and Elite age categories.
Vinkneswaran Sanujan from Hartley College Jaffna fighting in the Youth 81Kg was
beaten at the finals by a strong Swedish Boxer Mohammed Hannoun and Isuru
Hansaja a product of Vidyartha College fought in the 52Kg weight Category lost to
a hard hitting Ireland Boxer Ryan Dunne during the finals. Both boxers received a
Silver medals for their weight Categories. Attaab Manzil of Trinity College also
won the Silver medal in the Junior 50Kg category after lost to Abdullah Mhirat of
Jordan in a toe to toe contested fight.

In the Semifinal bout tactically boxer Dewmina Hettiarachchi in the Elite 60Kg
weight category was beaten by Swedish Boxer Mokhtar Ali whilst Prasad
Manatunga representing 56 Kg in Youth Division was also beaten by the host
country Swedish boxer. Chethiya Ekanayake representing Elite 56 Kg lost during a
closely contested bout with Ricardo Fernandes of Portugal.
The competition which attracted 460 entries from 19 countries this year is known
as the largest male boxing Tournament in the European Sector.
