Gayan Bandara Secures Best Boxer Title at Layton Cup Boxing

In a dominant performance, Navy’s Gayan Bandara showcased his boxing ability at the Layton Cup Boxing Championship held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium organized by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (BASL). The BASL saw the former National Champion Bandara outpointing his opponent, the young star Umayanga Mihiran of Vidyarathane Sports Club, in a thrilling Flyweight final.

Bandara’s boxing skills and aggressive approach throughout the match led to a majority decision victory over the 20-year-old Mihiran, who was previously recognized as the Best Boxer at the Nationals in February. Unfortunately, for Mihiran, this time he had to settle for the Best Loser’s award.

In the women’s Minimum Weight final, the Best Boxer title was claimed by Army’s H.R.N.N. Perera, who engaged in a thrilling contest against Police’s N.S. Wellappili. Perera emerged victorious in this closely fought battle.

Army boxers made a significant impact on the championship, securing a total of 15 medals, including five gold, two silver, and four bronze medals in the men’s category. Their women’s team also displayed remarkable skills, earning two gold and two silver medals.

The Air Force team also demonstrated their prowess, winning a total of 11 medals. Their women’s division secured five gold medals and one bronze, while their men’s team took home two gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.

Navy performed, finishing third in the overall rankings with a total of 10 medals. The men’s team contributed with two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals, while their women’s division claimed three bronze medals.

The Chief Guest at this prestigious event was Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya (retired), who is the Chairman of the Boxing Selection Committee.
